Dog Tag Finishes & Engraving: The Expert Guide
When you are looking for a pet ID tag that will actually survive your dog’s daily adventures, the material and the finish are just as important as the size. Will it rust at the beach? Will the engraving fade after a few months?
As master engravers, we don’t just buy off-the-shelf materials. We carefully select the base metals and apply multi-layered laser engraving techniques to ensure every tag leaves our Australian studio looking like a premium piece of jewellery. Here is everything you need to know about our finishes, our unique engraving process, and how to choose the right tag for your dog’s lifestyle.
Our Three Collections: Textures & Finishes
The Signature Collection (Stainless Steel)
Our stainless steel tags are built for extreme durability. The vast majority of this collection features a stunning Mirror Polish, giving the tags a highly reflective, premium jewellery feel. (Note: Our large military black and stainless steel tags currently feature a rugged brushed finish, but will be transitioning to a sleek mirror polish in the future!)

If you are looking for something feather-light, our anodised aluminium tags feature a unique Semi-Brushed Finish. It isn’t a glaring mirror polish, nor is it a heavily textured brush; it sits perfectly in the middle, offering a sleek, modern, and colourful matte-like appearance.

These heavy-duty, glamorous tags feature a solid alloy base that is finished with a high-shine Mirror Polish. Often paired with beautiful enamel accents, these tags are designed to catch the light and stand out.

If you look at most standard dog tags on the market, the engraving is usually a dark, dirty-looking grey or black. This happens when a basic laser burns the metal, leaving behind carbon and soot.
At MoodTag, we refuse to cut corners. We use a proprietary, multi-layered deep-etching technique:
- Step 1: The Deep Etch. For the first few laser passes, we deeply carve the metal away. This guarantees the text will never rub off (a promise backed by our Lifetime Engraving Guarantee), but it naturally leaves a dark mark.
- Step 2: The High-Frequency Polish. This is our secret weapon. We spend extra time hitting the tag with a high-frequency laser pulse. This cleans away all the dark, dirty carbon left in the grooves, revealing a brilliant, high-contrast silver finish inside the deep engraving.
This jeweller-grade clean-up takes extra time on the engraving bench, but it ensures your dog’s vital contact details offer maximum contrast and readability, without relying on cheap surface marking.
Matching the Material to Your Dog’s Lifestyle
The Beach Swimmer & Mud Roller
If your dog is constantly diving into the Australian surf or rolling in the mud, saltwater and grit are your biggest enemies. For these highly active water dogs, we strictly recommend our Signature Stainless Steel tags (specifically the raw, silver-coloured steel). Stainless steel is naturally marine-grade and rust-proof, meaning it will survive a lifetime of beach trips without corroding.
The City Walker & Cafe Cruiser
If your dog’s adventures mostly consist of neighbourhood walks, dog park visits, and lounging under your chair at the local cafe, you have total freedom! You are welcome to choose any material from our Chroma, Signature, or Luxe collections based entirely on your dog’s size and your personal style preference.
