Never-Fall MAX: heavy duty tags
The ring
What makes a dog tag heavy duty?
A heavy duty dog tag is one whose ring holds, not just a thicker tag.
Tags usually go missing when the thin split ring opens, so the strength has to be in the parts that hold the tag on:
- Never-Fall Ring, pull-force tested to 100kg: tested by our manufacturer on a pull-force testing machine before it is shipped to us.
- 26mm heavy-duty attachment ring between the Never-Fall Ring and your collar D-ring.
- 2.0mm stainless steel tag, deep laser engraved front and back with a fibre laser, so the letters are cut into the metal.
- Arrives assembled:
- Tag
- Never-Fall Ring
- 26mm heavy-duty attachment ring
- collar D-ring
The 100kg figure is the tested strength of the Never-Fall Ring itself, not a dog weight limit. More on why tags fall off in how to choose a dog ID tag that stays attached. Only need a heavy duty split ring for a tag you already have? See dog tag rings and hardware.

Who it’s for
Which dogs need a heavy duty dog tag?
Dogs that are hard on their gear need a heavy duty tag more than big dogs do. Choose one if your dog:
- pulls hard on the lead or lunges
- plays rough with other dogs
- is an escape artist or a rescue still settling in
- is a large or strong breed, or spends long days outdoors, swimming or in the bush
- has lost a tag before
A calm large dog doesn’t need the heavy duty setup just for its size; Never-Fall Lite suits everyday active dogs of any size.
Large sizes
Dog tags for large dogs: which size?
For a large dog ID tag, choose a Large size so the engraving is bigger and easier to read from a distance:
| Shape (Large) | Size | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Round | 35 x 35mm | 13g |
| Classic Heart | 35 x 33mm | 11g |
| Classic Bone | 50 x 28mm | 15g |
| Scout Military | 28 x 50mm | 17g |
Every other shape comes in one compact size. All are 2.0mm thick. See the dog tag size guide.
Compare setups
Heavy duty vs everyday: MAX or Lite?
The tags are the same; the difference is the ring.
| Never-Fall Ring | Price | Best for | Tag, engraving, shapes, colours | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Never-Fall Lite | 48kg pull-force tested | From $39.90 | Everyday active dogs, dog parks, daily walks, small dogs | Same |
| Never-Fall MAX (heavy duty) | 100kg pull-force tested | From $44.90 | Strong pullers, rough play, escape artists, large dogs, rescues | Same |
If you’re unsure and your dog pulls hard or has form for losing tags, the heavy duty MAX is the safe pick.
Honest limits
Tough, not indestructible
Tough dog tags still need checking, because no tag setup is indestructible. MAX is built to stay attached through pulling, play, scratching and swimming, but it isn’t designed to defeat a genuine snag, and no collar hardware should be: for unsupervised rough play, check the collar and remove it if there’s any risk of it catching. Check the collar, the 26mm ring and the tag now and then for wear. If the Never-Fall Ring fails in normal use, the Lifetime Never-Fall Ring Guarantee replaces the full setup.

Common questions
Heavy duty dog tag FAQs
What is the strongest dog tag MoodTag makes?
Never-Fall MAX is MoodTag’s strongest dog tag setup, with a Never-Fall Ring pull-force tested to 100kg, against 48kg for Lite.
What are the best dog tags for large dogs?
The best dog tags for large dogs pair a Large-size tag, which is easier to read from a distance, with a ring that can take a strong pull, such as MAX’s 100kg tested Never-Fall Ring.
What are the most durable dog tags?
The most durable dog tags are stainless steel, deep engraved rather than printed, and fitted to a ring that has been strength tested, because the ring usually fails before the tag. MAX meets all three, with a 100kg tested Never-Fall Ring.
Does 100kg mean the tag is for dogs up to 100kg?
No. 100kg is the tested pull strength of the Never-Fall Ring, not a dog weight. Choose by behaviour: the heavy duty setup for dogs that pull, play rough or lose tags.
Is a heavy duty dog ID tag heavier to wear?
No, the MAX tags are the same shapes, sizes and weights as Lite. The difference is the stronger Never-Fall Ring that holds the tag on.
Will a heavy duty dog tag jingle?
Yes, it hangs from the collar, so it can clink against other hardware. For no jingling, choose the Silent Slide-On.
Can I add a backup tag?
Yes. Add Plus on the product page for $9.90: an engraved aluminium backup tag for the spare collar or travel bag, 2 spare 26mm attachment rings, priority engraving and same-day dispatch Monday to Friday.
