Small Dogs and Puppies

Dog tags for small dogs and puppies

MoodTag dog tags for small dogs are light stainless steel dog ID tags, from 6 grams, deep laser engraved and fitted to a Never-Fall Ring pull-force tested to 48kg. Small dogs pull, scratch and play too, so the ring matters as much as the weight. MoodTag is an Australian brand specialising in premium Never-Fall dog ID tags for active dogs, and this is our Never-Fall Lite setup: from $39.90, assembled, with free shipping Australia-wide.

How heavy is each small dog tag?

Small dog tags should be light and still readable. Every small dog ID tag and small dog name tag in the range is 2.0mm stainless steel, engraved front and back; these are the compact and Small sizes:

Toy breeds

Which tag suits a toy breed or the tiniest dogs?

For the tiniest dogs, choose the flat Silent Slide-On in size S. Our compact hanging shapes are 27 to 30mm wide and weigh 6 to 8 grams, which suits most small dogs; for a Chihuahua or a toy breed under about 4kg, the Slide-On fits 15mm collars and sits flat on the collar instead of hanging, so nothing swings or jingles. Puppies

Puppy ID tags: when can a puppy wear a tag?

A puppy can start wearing an ID tag once it is walking and running on its own. Choose a compact or Small size, and check the collar fit as your puppy grows. Puppy name tags follow the same layout as adult tags: the name on the front and your phone number on the back. Plus ($9.90) is worth adding before a new pup arrives: an engraved aluminium backup tag, 2 spare attachment rings, priority engraving and same-day dispatch Monday to Friday.

Engraving

Small dog tags engraved to stay readable

Keep the engraving short on a small tag so the letters stay large: the dog’s name on the front, your phone number on the back. MoodTag engraving is cut about 0.05 to 0.10mm into the steel with a fibre laser, and the Lifetime Engraving Readability guarantee replaces the tag if normal wear makes it unreadable. The ring

Why small dogs still need a strong ring

Small dogs lose tags the same way big dogs do: the thin split ring opens.

Pulling, scratching and play twist a standard ring until it works open. Never-Fall Lite’s ring is pull-force tested to 48kg by our manufacturer on a pull-force testing machine, and it arrives assembled:

  1. Tag
  2. Never-Fall Ring
  3. 26mm heavy-duty attachment ring
  4. collar D-ring

The 48kg figure is the ring’s tested strength, not a dog weight limit.

Common questions

Small dog tag FAQs

What is the best dog tag for a small dog?

For most small dogs, a compact stainless tag on a secure ring: Never-Fall Lite with Classic Star, Signature Bone, Luna Heart or Classic Hexagon.

Is a Never-Fall tag too heavy for a small dog?

No. The lightest small dog tags weigh 6 to 8 grams, and every product page lists the exact size and weight, so you can see what goes on the collar before you buy.

What size tag should a puppy wear?

A compact shape or a Small size: Classic Star, Classic Hexagon, Luna Heart, Signature Bone or the Small Classic Heart, Round or Bone.

Can a Chihuahua wear a MoodTag?

Yes. A compact shape such as the Classic Star (6g) works, and for the tiniest dogs we suggest the flat Silent Slide-On in size S, which fits 15mm collars and doesn’t hang.

Can cats wear these tags?

Yes. The smaller shapes (Classic Round, Classic Heart, Luna Heart, Classic Star and Classic Hexagon) suit cats as well; the Scout Military and large Classic Bone are too big for a cat.

Should a small dog have MAX instead?

Only if it pulls hard, plays rough or has lost tags before. MAX has the stronger 100kg Never-Fall Ring on the same tags; see heavy duty dog tags.
