Deep Laser Engraving: The Science of Indestructible Pet Tags

  • Engraving method: Deep laser engraving (material removal)
  • Approx depth: ~0.05mm – 0.10mm (≈50 – 100 μm)
  • Feel: Recessed grooves (tactile)

When shopping for a pet ID tag, you will often hear the word “engraved” thrown around loosely. However, in the jewellery and pet industries, not all engraving is created equal. There is a massive difference between a superficial surface mark that rubs off in six months and a true, deep-etched groove designed to last a lifetime.

At MoodTag, our Australian studio is built around industrial-grade deep laser engraving technology. We don’t just print your contact details onto the metal; we physically carve them into the core of the tag. Here is a look behind the bench at the science and technology that goes into our indestructible pet tags.

The Technology: Fibre Optic Lasers vs. Mall Kiosks

The Problem with Scratch-Engraving and CO2 Marking

If you have ever purchased a tag from an automated machine at a pet store or a mall kiosk, you have likely received a “scratch-engraved” tag. These machines drag a diamond tip across the metal, creating jagged, sharp edges and very shallow text.

Similarly, cheap CO2 lasers are often used just to “mark” or bleach the very top layer of the metal without actually cutting into it. Both methods result in text that quickly fades, scratches, and becomes illegible after a few months of rough play.

The MoodTag Standard: High-Powered Fibre Optic Lasers

We completely bypass outdated scratch machines. Our studio utilises high-powered fibre optic laser engraving machines. This technology is incredibly precise and powerful enough to physically vaporise and remove the metal, layer by layer.

This results in two massive advantages:

  • First, the edges of the text are flawlessly smooth, unlike the jagged burrs left by drag-engraving.
  • Second, because we are using precision laser software, we have the limitless ability to engrave any custom typography or design we create, freeing you from the rigid, boring templates found at mall kiosks.

The Tactile Test: How Deep is “Deep”?

If you run your thumb over a finished MoodTag, you can immediately feel the difference. Your fingernail will catch on the letters. Our fibre optic lasers physically groove into the metal to a depth of approximately 50 to 100 microns, depending on the specific metal density of the tag (Marine-Grade Stainless Steel vs. Aluminium).

The Expert Balance: Permanence Without the Grime

As master engravers, one of the most critical things we calculate is the exact depth of the laser cut. A common misconception is that deeper is always better. In reality, if you engrave too deeply into a dog tag, you create a deep canyon that instantly fills with mud, dirt, and oils from your dog’s coat, making the text impossible to read in an emergency.

Our 50-100 micron depth is the perfect structural sweet spot. It is deeply carved enough to be absolutely permanent and resistant to heavy surface scratching, but shallow and smooth enough that it won’t trap grime. If the tag gets muddy at the beach, a quick wipe with a damp cloth cleans the grooves out instantly, ensuring your vital contact details are always bright, high-contrast, and ready to be read.
