The Ultimate Dog Tag Size Guide

Choosing the right dog tag size isn’t just about how it looks on your dog’s collar—it is a critical factor for their safety and comfort. At MoodTag, after designing and deep-etching over 10,000 tags in our Australian studio, we know exactly which shapes and materials work best for every type of dog.

Matching the Tag to Your Dog

Large & Active

For breeds like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, and German Shepherds, durability is non-negotiable. You need our 2mm thick Stainless Steel. A large steel tag will never bend or snap, no matter how hard they play.

Medium Breeds

Dogs like Staffies or Kelpies can easily get away with a Small or Large stainless steel tag. However, they are also the perfect size for our Luxe Collection. At 2mm to 3mm thick, these provide excellent durability with added style.

Small & Toy Breeds

For smaller dogs like Dachshunds or Toy Poodles, a heavy tag can cause neck strain. We highly recommend our feather-light Chroma Collection (1mm Aluminium) or the naturally compact Luxe Paw tags.

Expert Sizing Tips from the Engraving Bench

🛡️ 1. The “Growing Puppy” Strategy

A heavy 2mm steel tag can be too bulky for an 8-week-old puppy. We highly recommend purchasing two tags. Start with a feather-light 1mm Chroma tag. Once they reach adult size, upgrade to Stainless Steel and keep the aluminium tag attached to their harness as a vital backup!

⚠️ 2. Beware the “Water Bowl Dip” (Too Big)

The most common mistake we see is owners buying a “Large” tag for a toy breed to fit more text. If a tag is too big, it will constantly clank against the water bowl and run the risk of getting caught on branches. Always choose the size that matches your dog’s chest clearance.

🔍 3. The “Micro-Font” Problem (Too Small)

Conversely, buying a tiny tag for a massive dog to “keep it out of the way” forces the engraver to shrink your phone number to a microscopic font. If a stranger finds your fearful dog at night, they need to read that number quickly without getting too close. When in doubt on a large dog, size up!
